The face of lacrosse in Southern Maryland would be forever changed with the establishment of 7 new varsity lacrosse teams in 2000. Because of the relative infancy of the varsity programs in the area, attracting interest from college recruiters posed a daunting and difficult challenge.

In 2002, the trio of Jonathan Montes, Greg Zecca and Rodger Ganley formed the Southern Maryland Select lacrosse team to combat this challenge and to help promote underexposed lacrosse talent in southern Maryland.  After having spent the previous 10 years as the head lacrosse coach of Haverford College, Greg Zecca assumed the role of General Manager and his connections with the college coaching world would prove invaluable.  With his passion, fire and old school philosophies Jonathan Montes assumed the role of head coach.   Rodger Ganley, who has coached at a local club and high school program, assumed the role of assistant coach, team athletic trainer and recruiting event coordinator.

The first team was hand selected by coach Montes to play at Laxtoberfest and they played under the name Southern Maryland All-Stars. But the need for an outlet for elite players was so high that the following summer the first tryouts were held and the team name was changed to Southern Maryland Select to help foster an identity. That summer the team competed in a recruiting showcase at University of Delaware and Laxtoberfest. The team was very successful and many players were approached by college coaches.

Since 2002, SMS players have been recruited by many elite college programs including Princeton, Hopkins, Cornell, NAVY, Ohio State, Virginia, Duke, Dartmouth, Maryland, UMBC, Towson, Hobart, Bucknell, Washington College, Gettysburg, Salisbury, St. Mary’s College and a whole host of other schools.
